Chris Brogan on Social Media, “The Serendipity Engine”

Chris Brogan, author of “Trust Agents,” recently spoke at the Web 2.0 Expo as a keynote speaker.  I found a video of this speech on his blog and wanted to share it with you, because it provides what I think is a much needed reminder of the true purpose of Twitter and other social media sites.  It’s only 10 minutes long and well worth the time investment.

All too often, people forget that social media’s purpose is to make personal connections.  Instead, good-intentioned business people try to market themselves on Twitter; something it was not designed for.  If we are going to truly monetize social media, we must use it as intended: build meaningful, value-added relationships.  Start a conversation, or join one.  Talk with someone, not at them.  That is the only way to build relationships.

I love the quote he offers toward the end, “The difference between an audience and a community is the direction of the chairs.”

I hope you enjoyed the video as much as I did.  Video the perfect tool to build relationships on Twitter, I wrote a post on that explains how to Use Video in Your Tweets>>
